Luxury car sales waaay down

Daimler AG executives may have thought they had escaped the brutal economics of the mainstream auto market when they got rid of Chrysler in the summer of 2007.

But a little over a year later, Daimler and other luxury carmakers are struggling in a downturn that has buffeted the fanciest nameplates as severely as the rest of the industry.

Sales of imported vehicles in Japan plunged to a 15-year low in 2008 as consumers shied away from pricey foreign cars amid a deepening global downturn, an industry group said Thursday.

The Japanese bought 219,231 imported vehicles in 2008, down 17.3 percent from a year earlier, said the Japan Automobile Importers Association. The figure, which includes vehicles made by Japanese automakers abroad, marked the lowest sales since 1993.

Aston Martin to Revive Lagonda

In the 80’s Lagonda symbolized style, elegance and a very boxy style of a luxury vehicle. They have since discontinued it, due to lack of demand. Aston Martin, which owns the Lagonda brand, plans to revive it for the 2012 model year. The brand will consist of 2 saloon type vehicles, which Aston Martin is currently lacking, due to it’s strictly 2 door product mix. Without having to dilute the brand they will be able to bring new blood into the life of Aston Martin through the old Lagonda label.
