Sources close to Saab say that owner General Motors is having a difficult time trying to find an interested buyer for the Swedish automaker. Technically, GM put Saab under a “strategic review” as a part of the Detroit automaker’s long-term plan presented to Congress last month, but sources close to GM and Saab say that the Swedish brand has been heavily shopped around to potential suitors to no avail.

Though Fiat and Tata had long been rumored as potential suitors for the Swedish brand, the massive overall drop in new car sales has forced those companies – and any other potential suitors – to focus on staying afloat, not expanding their lineups.

Officially, GM is mum about its plans for Saab’s future.

“We are not commenting on the details of the strategic review,” Hummer-Saab-Cadillac sales channel spokesperson Joanne Krell told Automotive News. “As soon as we have some details to report, we will.”

A source close to GM told the publication that the automaker loses money on every Saab sold in North America due to a weak exchange between the dollar and the euro.

Saab hasn’t officially decided whether it will apply for the 25 billion kronor ($3.19 billion) bailout being offered by the Swedish government, though analysts predict the automaker will decide to.

GM has had a difficult time trying to sell Hummer, the other brand that it has quietly put up for sale. The two brands’ distribution in the U.S. is closely tied together due to a plan to combine retail outlets for Cadillac, Hummer and Saab in major markets.

It is believe that a purchase of Saab would not include the Swedish and German engineering facilities mostly staffed by Saab engineers. Those facilities have focused heavily on small displacement, turbocharged engines that most analysts see as the future for traditional gas-powered engines in automobiles. Not surprisingly, GM’s initial interest in Saab back in 1989, when it acquired half of the automaker, was due in part to the company’s small turbo expertise.

Ford has had a difficult time finding a buyer for its Swedish unit, Volvo, as well, meaning that the future of the Swedish auto industry is very much in doubt.

Seems no car company is interested in picking up General Motors’ declining brand, Hummer. With sales dropping nearly 50% in the past quarters, no wonder there are not many holding companies that are willing to step up to the plate and save the brand.

Hummer has proven it’s strength in the new and up-coming Yuppie market, however increasing fuel prices caused a significant drop in it’s sales. GM using the Hummer name after the success of it’s H1 series, which has been used for decades as the flagship of it’s Army, built out the brand to offer more economical versions of it’s H1. The H2, H3 and H3 SUT were born.

Built on the same platform as the GMC Yukon, it shares a large number of components with the fairly popular SUV. The body and overall exterior styling offer the unique boxy look that distinguishes the brand.

As reported, Indian jeep manufacturer Mahindra has dropped out of the running for the brand, as has the Russian SUV manufacturer that was slightly interested in it.

The kicker came when even the Chinese cancelled negotiations on the brand. China Car News reports that Changfeng dropped out of negotiations for the brand, when they concluded that the average fuel consumption for the Hummer brand was too great for the Chinese market.

Changfeng in the meantime has changed it’s tune and announced it was never interested in the brand to begin with, however interest was clearly shown, as it’s management team visited the Hummer assembly plant.

Whomever picks up the brand will have access to widespread technologies available in Chevy’s truck line, such as it’s Vortec engine line, it’s OnStar system and it’s sophisticated dealer network.

According to Friday’s issue of the Wall-Street Journal, the new Chief Operating Officer Fritz has kept careful eye of the product mix of General Motors. In the past 60-90 days, these reviews have been taken extremely seriously, as everyone knows sale are down. Everything is forgiven in the auto industry, except dropping sales and lack of profit.

GM is launching 18 new cars and crossovers within the next 2-3 years along with several special interest vehicles, one of them being the Volt. While doing this, they are looking over their alliances in Asia to look for any possible models of small vehicles they could seamlessly integrate into North America.

Introduction of small vehicles is very important, as truck sales and sales of SUV’s have hit record lows. Toyota has come within 1 percentage point of hitting the same market share as GM, largely due to it’s flourishing business in the small vehicle segment.

It has been confirmed that GM will not be updating the current H3 models, due to cutbacks on new product development in the Hummer line. It will also stop current efforts to develop the H4, which was to battle the Jeep Wrangler. Rumors are running wild as to whom exactly will be the lucky company to purchase Hummer, as it goes on the sale block…

Word around Detroit is that GM would love to offload Hummer, it’s gas guzzler brand. Numbers thrown around are in the 500-700 million dollar range, but whose counting? Some think, since the Hummer is still a very popular brand in Russia, it might be good enough to be brought up by the same gentleman that bought a portion of Magna last year.
Of course, lets not count out Mahindra Mahindra, who is already in the business of SUV’s so this would be a deal more along the lines of it then Tata. Lets look at Tata. Has anyone heard of Tata prior to their announcement of making an extra small car that was to retail for $2500? Didn’t think so. So what is the logic behind it to buy Hummer, which is on exactly the opposite end of the spectrum. Luxurious and expensive. Time will tell, but it should be an interesting summer…
